29/01/2010German Healthcare Export Group e.V. / GHE e.V.
Thermo Fisher Scientific announced a distribution partnership with OPTEC LLC, the leading provider of cutting-edge medical, surgical, microscopic and industrial metrology solutions in the territory of the Russian Federation and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).
OPTEC LLC will provide Thermo Scientific Anatomical Pathology cancer diagnostic instrumentation to hospitals across Russia as part of a national oncological program.
Malignant neoplasm is the second most prevalent cause of death in Russia, with approximately 480,000 new cases diagnosed annually. More than 2.5 million patients are registered in cancer departments across the country, representing 1.8 percent of the entire population. The national oncological program was introduced to promote early diagnosis and timely treatment of the disease. It is estimated that the program will decrease the death rate from cancer by 4 percent by 2012.
OPTEC LLC has won eight of the 11 contracts tendered for the right to deliver advanced equipment to Russian cancer departments as part of the oncological program. The agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific enables OPTEC LLC to supply hospitals in Moscow, Penza, Kirov, Volgograd and Voronezh with more than $2 million of state-of-the-art Thermo Scientific Anatomical Pathology cancer diagnostic technology.
The Thermo Scientific Excelsior ES, a powerful tissue processor, is one of the solutions OPTEC will deliver. It offers the superior capability to carry out automatic, xylene-free tissue processing with unmatched tissue quality and low cost of ownership. The Excelsior ES has been designed to meet the most challenging tissue processing applications while being easy to operate even by non-experts. It offers unparalleled safety and maximizes productivity.
OPTEC LLC will also distribute the Thermo Scientific Cytospin 4 Cytocentrifuge. The instrument provides economical thin-layer preparations from any liquid matrix, especially hypocellular fluids such as spinal fluids and urines. Featuring a sealed head in a microbiological cabinet, the system ensures the highest operational safety before, during and after sample preparation. Furthermore, it is easy to use and highly reliable.
In addition, OPTEC LLC will supply the Thermo Scientific Varistain Gemini ES and Thermo Scientific Shandon Varistain 24-4 automated slide stainers that have been designed to maximize efficiency by organizing the staining workflow of laboratories. The program will also see the Thermo Scientific Microm HM550DC cryostat being made available, offering users consistency and reliability in performing frozen sections.
Giulio Cerroni, vice president of commercial operations EMAP for Anatomical Pathology at Thermo Fisher Scientific, comments: “This contract is an exciting opportunity for us to further strengthen our presence in the cancer diagnostics market in Russia. OPTEC LLC is a leading supplier of advanced scientific solutions, like ours, that are designed to solve the toughest analytical challenges, from routine testing to complex research and discovery. We look forward to this collaboration and to the exciting new business opportunities it presents.”
