The electronic identity card for medical doctors, an elementary component of telematics within healthcare, continues to take centre stage in terms of the appearances of both Chambers of Physicians in North Rhine-Westphalia at Medica 2007. Both chambers will therefore present the progress of various projects which involve the electronic Health Professional Card.
When working in electronic systems - from practical software through hospital information systems right up to the Internet - doctors may authenticate themselves by using their electronic identity card, and can sign documents and encrypt e-mails to be sent securely. “All this is now possible, even without the patients electronic health card”, Dr. Theodor Windhorst points out.
Citing examples, the Chambers of Physicians demonstrate the benefits of secure communication, assured through the Health Professional Card for doctors:
• authentication, encrypting and signature
• secure and confidential sending of electronic medical
documents from doctor to doctor
• logging into portals
• secure access to documents for board members at the Chamber
of Physicians in North Rhine
A hallmark for this year’s trade fair appearance will be a project, supported by the Federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, on transmission of structured electronic medical documents, legally signed by the electronic identity card for doctors.
“Secure electronic communication between doctors will make their jobs easier and thereby result in more time for patient contact, unless crowded out by additional bureaucratic burdens”, President of the Westphalian Chamber, Dr. Windhorst believes. “The identity card makes telematics secure for us and our patients.” The (state-)chambers of physicians therefore continued to lobby for the further development of the identity card and its usage options: confidential communication with the help of the electronic Health Professional Card - between carefully protected computer systems - will soon be a part of everyday clinical use.
