More comfortable and sustainable wearable patch sensors

By providing innovative raw materials, Covestro helped co-develop wearable patch sensors with accensors that are not only more comfortable, but also more sustainable. The result is a clever system featuring Baymedix® adhesives and foams as well as Platilon® thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films.

Combine comfort and functionality for wearable smart patches
Smart patches are a kind of wearable sensor used in the medical industry. They are applied to a patient’s skin with an adhesive and feature a foam part and embedded electronics to monitor the patient’s physiological signs such as their pulse.
Current trends are moving in the direction of ever-greater patch functionality, paired with improved comfort and ongoing miniaturization. This also includes a more sustainable, long-lasting use of such wearable devices.

Create a completely new design for wearable smart patches
Many mart patches currently in use to monitor vital parameters are rather uncomfortable to wear and not very small. What’s more, when the patch does not adhere to the skin anymore, the entire device – including the electronics – is simply thrown away.
The idea was therefore to create a wearable patch that is more comfortable and flexible for patients, and that reduces waste. At the same time, it should be a highly sophisticated medical device with functionality for easier monitoring and diagnoses.

A clever two-element system for wearable patches
Together with accensors, Covestro created a smart patch featuring two elements: The Disposable Patch, which houses sensors and is used once, and the ReUse Patch, which houses the electronics.
Thanks to Baymedix®, the adhesive makes the wearable patches skin-friendly and offers low trauma when removed from the skin. Special Platilon® films and foams made from Baymedix® are used to integrate various monitoring sensors into the patch.
The ReUse Patch can be used many times, meaning effective resource conservation.

Baymedix® for wearable patches

Covestro also supports customers in the manufacturing with a process that allows wearables to be efficiently produced from roll to roll. The electronic module is fixed to the carrier film in one step and embedded in a thermoformable polyurethane foam that is fed onto a second film. The patch is then fixed with a special, skin-friendly adhesive. The adhesive system and thermoformable foam are based on Baymedix®  polyurethane raw materials. With this Covestro offers a complete solution for modern and high-quality wearable patch devices.

Platilon® for wearable patches

Wearable electronic patch devices are already being used in a variety of medical applications, including monitoring, diagnostics and drug delivery. They help patients gain greater mobility. The wearables must be worn on the skin around the clock for a prolonged period of time so they need to be particularly kind to the skin, comfortable, but also adhere firmly to the skin. Among other things, Covestro has developed special breathable TPU films from the Platilon® range for this purpose.

Baymedix®/Platilon® for Wound care

Covestro offers holistic material solutions for all layers of modern wound dressings. Polyurethane adhesive components from the Baymedix® A range are characterized by excellent breathability - an important prerequisite for moisture management in advanced wound dressings. The adhesive system can also be easily removed from the skin without sticking to the hair (low trauma).

Covestro  Baymedix® FP also provides polyurethane raw materials for foams with excellent absorption and retention properties. By directly coating the carrier film with the adhesive system or foam, process and laminating steps can also be saved in production which increases efficiency. Special thermoplastic polyurethane films (TPU) from the Platilon® range with a particularly mat surface round off the range.

Baymedix®/Platilon® for Wound prevention

Covestro has developed a design study for wound prevention that deals with the three most important factors for bedsore (decubitus): Pressure, friction and shear.

The main features of the prototype wound prevention dressing made of Baymedix® and Platilon® materials are:
• Optimized friction, shear and pressure management
• Excellent moisture management to support a healthy microclimate
• Application and skin friendly polyurethane adhesive
• Efficient and sustainable manufacturing technology

Components based on these products help increase both cost and manufacturing efficiency by allowing roll to roll processing and inline production of all layers. During processing, thermoplastic welding of the edges is possible. Moreover, the process is energy saving and environmentally compatible because production steps are reduced.

Baymedix® CD: seamless Films for medical gloves

Aqueous polyurethane dispersions of the Baymedix® CD range were specially developed for use in latex-free, highly elastic films. Their outstanding mechanical stability makes them an excellent starting material for seamless medical gloves. Such films can be produced both in the dipping process and in the efficient roll-to-roll process.
